Friends of Tortington Event

Date: Sunday 12th May
Time: 3.00 pm
Venue: St Mary's Tortington

John Godfrey, an engaging and knowledgeable local historian, gives an illustrated overview of the war years and the impact on our local area.

The talk will be followed by refreshments and a chance to enjoy the building and churchyard. All this leading up to, at 4 pm, a performance by the Barbershop Quartet, with some of the music reflecting the mid-1900s.

Admission is free but donations to the work of the Friends of Tortington would be much appreciated.

The Ascension of the Lord

We celebrate the Ascension of the Lord on Thursday 9th May with a Sung Mass at St Nicholas' as 7.00 pm.

One of the principal days of the Christian year, the Ascension of the Lord marks the assent of Jesus' glorified body into heaven forty days after the resurrection.

Portraits of Jesus

Date: Wednesday 15th & 22nd May, 5th & 12th June
Time: Drinks from 6.00 pm / Talk starts at 6.30 pm

The Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John bear witness to the ministry, teaching, death and resurrection of Jesus. And yet, each Gospel portrays Jesus, along with his actions and words, a little differently. How are we to understand these differences?

The Gospels are best understood as an ancient Greek genre called bios, which means life. But whilst it’s true that the word biography comes from this term, the goal of the authors who employed this genre was to paint, as it were, a portrait of a person.

And so, just as a no two portraits of the same person are the same, with each artist seeking to draw out a different perspective, so it is with the Gospel writers. Each highlights certain themes that together make up their particular portrait of Jesus.

In a series of four talks, Fr David introduces the origins and main themes of these four 'portraits' which, when taken together, give a vivid picture of Jesus of Nazareth – a figure who changed the course of world history.

Friends of St Nicholas Evensong and Drinks

Time: Choral Evensong 5.00 pm / Collector Earl's Garden from 5.45 pm

The annual Friends of St Nicholas Choral Evensong and Drinks in the Collector Earl's Garden is on Sunday 2nd June.

The evening begins at 5.00 pm with evensong in St Nicholas', Arundel's historic parish church. Following the service there are drinks (paid) in the neighbouring Collector Earl's garden along with nibbles and music by The Featherstone Jazz 4. A tour of the garden is also available.

All proceeds from the even go to The Friends of St Nicholas, a charity set up to support the restoration and maintenance of the church.
